JULY 2012
ANTIQUATED BAND
Since I last wrote, we’ve had two great nights at the United Services Club in Sidcup. Eleanor Keenan was our featured vocalist with the big band and proved just why she is regarded by most as this country’s number one female singer. The seven piece was also in fine form with great solos from all the guys including Pete Cooper, David Black and Colin Hickman.
Some regular followers of the band whilst out antique hunting, couldn’t believe their luck in one shop when they stumbled across a framed photograph of none other than the Len Phillips Big Band (£14 for the framed photo or £12 for the frame alone)! It seems we have become antiquities and cheap ones at that!! We think the photo must be from around 1986 as Len is still playing lead alto. If you look very carefully you can also make out Colin Stuart and Billy Magee. I’m not sure David Dickinson will be featuring us just yet though!
Hopefully see you soon,
Joe.
BIG BAND BREAKS THIS YEAR
Both Mundesley and South Downs still have a few rooms left for our weekends next month. If you fancy a last minute getaway then details are on the diary page. Enclosed with this newsletter you should find a flyer for our one night appearances at Bembridge and Seacroft. It’s been a while since we last went over to the Isle of Wight so I look forward to seeing many of you there in December. The island’s supply of crab and lobster is worth the trip alone! The date at Seacroft replaces the weekend previously held at Pontins Pakefield. Organiser David Gwyn always ensures a good line-up with daytime ballroom/sequence dancing and this year he has Matthew Ford performing too.
NEXT YEAR’S FIXTURES SO FAR
As I’m always keen to ensure that you know what we’re up to before anyone else I wanted to tell you what’s in store for 2013. I am very pleased to say that Warners have given us a second break. In addition to our regular May appearance, we now have another mid-week break at Sinah Warren in October next year. Our weekends for Richardson’s at South Downs and Mundesley have moved slightly in the calendar so check those too. As I’ve said before, we will be back at the hugely successful Potters for a full weekend in March. One night appearances so far include a night with Stephen Triffitt’s tribute to Sinatra at Sinah Warren on the August bank holiday weekend and a performance on June 17th as part of the Potters big band festival. The diary has all the details.
THE BIG BAND AT SIDCUP
We’ll be back at the United Services Club this Sunday playing the best of the big bands including Miller, Basie, Kenton and Heath. Both Anton Browne and Eleanor Keenan will be singing so expect a great evening. The date is July 29th, we start at 8pm and tickets are £10, available in advance from Ann Phillips on 01322 521 515 or on the door.
EASTBOURNE CONCERTS
We do of course have one of our biggest concerts of the year next month in Eastbourne. The enclosed flyer should give you all the details. In November we will be back in Eastbourne at the Devonshire Park Theatre with Anita Harris in a new concert entitled ‘Heroes and Sweethearts’. Tickets for the David Jacobs concert in August are now on sale. The November tickets will go on sale from mid August.
