JANUARY 2011
HAPPY NEW YEAR
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. Fortunately the snow seemed to run out in time to cause minimal disruption to the festive period. It wasn’t however in time for our December date at the Club in Sidcup! A very big ‘thank you’ to those of you who braved the elements to see the band (who very nearly all made it on time)! As there was no newsletter for December I thought I should also make a mention of the tremendous performance from Enrico Tomasso at the Club back in November. His trumpet playing and singing was truly exceptional in my opinion and I know many of you felt the same.
2011 sees the band back at all its regular venues with a few new cabaret acts and concerts planned so we look forward to seeing you all at some point over the coming twelve months. I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy new year.
Joe.
BACK AT TRINITY BY POPULAR DEMAND
Enclosed with this month’s newsletter you should find both a flyer and ticket order form for our concert next month at Trinity School, Croydon. After such a great reception there last year and with so much positive feedback from you about the venue, we felt a return visit was essential. We will be there on Friday, 11th February and this year we will be featuring special guest Shane Hampsheir as well as of course Anton and Eleanor. The concert hall at Trinity School is state-of-the-art with excellent acoustics; it really is a fantastic place to see and hear the band. Once again there will be a reasonably priced bar, easy parking on site and fantastic seating. Below is a small map showing the school’s location, just outside Croydon town centre in leafy Shirley.
A BUSY START TO THE YEAR FOR THE LEN PHILLIPS SEVEN
Len’s seven-piece band has two very attractive engagements for you this month. First there is what is becoming the regular spot at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho. This is the lunchtime slot on Sunday, 16th January featuring Anton Browne and Julia Stone. Tickets are available from Ronnie’s on 020 7439 0747. As all the band’s previous appearances here have been sold-out we do recommend that you book in advance. The second gig for the seven-piece is at the United Services Club, Sidcup on Sunday, 23rd January at 8pm. This month the band will be featuring singer Paul Wood with a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Those of you who saw Paul before will, I know, testify as to what a fine act he is.
ADVANCED NOTICE
Although tickets are not yet on sale, I wanted to give you some warning of a very special engagement we have later in the year as some of you might like to note it in your diaries. On Wednesday, 24th August, the Big Band will be back at the Winter Garden in Eastbourne for a matinee concert. But not just any concert, oh no…this concert will have none other than the wonderful David Jacobs as compere! Not only that, but we will have Mr Gary Williams with us as guest vocalist. The concert promises to be a very musical and entertaining event, so do make a note. I’ll let you know once tickets are on sale.
BAND TRIVIA
So, who was it from the Len Phillips Big Band that once appeared in EastEnders? It was of course Anton Browne! It was a few years back now that a very cool looking Mr Browne made his BBC, Walford debut. So on with this month’s question…
In a former life, which member of the Len Phillips Big Band was a professional footballer?
